Power transmission will enter the wireless age

Recently, Korea Advanced Institute of Technology (KAIST) and Korea Railway Research Institute (KRRI) jointly improved a power wireless transmission technology to provide stable 60kHz and 180kW wireless power transmission for large-scale transport systems such as railways.

According to reports, the technology called the wireless power locomotive system (OLEV). OLEV-loaded locomotives can receive wireless power anytime, anywhere, without having to go to a dedicated charging station or change batteries, making their batteries one-fifth the size of traditional electric locomotives. At the same time, OLEV meets the international standards in the field of electromagnetic.

In 2011, an OLEV-loaded prototype bus and a rail coal truck were independently developed by KAIST when the system was able to deliver 20 kHz and 10 kW of power to two vehicles at 85% efficiency.

The improvements made by both agencies at this time show that OLEV can be used in larger transport systems. Professor Dong-Ho Cho, director of the KAIST Wireless Power Transmission Technology and Development Center, introduced the improvements to reporters: "We increased the system's power transmission density by more than three times; reduced and reduced the size and weight of the power receiving module; Reducing the cost of OLEV's major components, such as power and receiving systems, makes it easier to commercialize. "

It is learned that KAIST and KRRI will continue to improve this technology. They will carry out tests of rail coal vehicles in May this year, urban road driving tests in July and high-speed railway tests in September.

Dong-Ho Cho told reporters that if the technology eventually becomes widely available, some traditional rail facilities, such as cables, electrodes and pantographs, will be canceled and rail construction costs will be greatly reduced. At the same time, as the above-mentioned equipment is not required, the space required for the railway will also be smaller, which will reduce the cost of constructing the tunnel. In addition, the technology will also solve the high-speed rail noise, pantograph connection problems.
